- Mt. Mazama, Ore. – lost its top in eruptions 7,000 years ago, this eventually formed Crater Lake
- Mt. Vesuvius, Italy – buried Pompeii in AD 79
- Mt. Fuji, Japan – the picturesque symbol of Japan; last erupted in 1707
- Mt. Tambora, Indonesia – the eruption in 1815 caused “a year without summer” in 1816
- Llullaillaco, Argentina/Chile – world’s tallest active volcano: 22,109 feet; it last erupted in 1877
- Krakatau, Indonesia – the 1883 eruption wiped out an entire island and colored the sunsets around the world for 2 years
- Mt. Pelee, Martinique – sadly, only two people in the nearby town of 30,000 people survived the 1902 eruption
- Lassen Peak, Calif. – the 1917 eruption was the last in our 48 contiguous states, until Mt. St. Helens in 1980
- Mt. St. Helens, Wash. – the 1980 eruption killed 57 people
- Mauna Loa, Hawaii – remains the world’s largest active volcano, it’s last eruption was in 1984
