The Incas

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

One of the most fascinating things in the history of humans is the Inca Indians. They were a civilization centered in South America and were very advanced for their time. Becoming a major force in the region somewhere around the 1300 hundreds, they conquered much of the area around them. They had many habits that would seem strange to us, but it seems to have worked well for them.

They believed in the Sun God and worshipped him as their god. They believe their king was a “child of the sun”. They also made many advances that would be surprising to us. They were able to perform skilled operations such as brain surgery and had a written language. Their empire came to an end with the arrival of the Spaniards, but they live on in the minds of those who remember.

Parking, Parking, Parking

One thing about living near the beach is that you get to know the ins and outs of the place. Every local who goes to the beach knows that parking the car will figure into where you go and what you do. The only good thing is that I have learned to adjust and I know some of the good places to go. Whenever you visit Virginia Beach, you need to head for the 8th street parking lot.

This is probably the best lot at the beach. It’s rarely filled and has good access to the boardwalk. It is also close to a little spot I know on 5th street which will often have a band. I like to hear the music and often go there when I have the chance. As far as the rest of the place, good luck! I sure that the local officials will address the problem and find some kind of solution. The beach will never be able to grow any unless additional parking is found.

Everybody’s Happy!

As of late, I am sure you are all aware that we have been remodeling our house. We have completed much of the hard work such as painting and general repair. We bought a new T.V. and some new furniture as well. The next thing on our list is getting some rugs to make the rooms complete. There is nothing like the floors to ensure that everything comes together and flows into one another.

Being as that we have had many different people inputting into how our house should look, we have a wide variety of furniture and pictures that weren’t always compatible. It was necessary to look long and hard at the choices we had to finish the job. Due to the large expenses we had in getting the house to where we wanted it, we knew that we would need to find some cheap rugs to enable our budget to last.

After some researching on the subject, we came to the conclusion that there was only one place to shop. We had found a company online called superiorrugs.com that had all the brands of rugs that we desired. They are one of the world’s largest suppliers of Area rugs and we knew that we could count on them to provide the products we needed. We finally decided to purchase an Oriental rug for the living room and a Persian rug for the family room.

After all was said and done, we were very satisfied with the choices we had made. My wife was happy to find the perfect match for the family room while I was glad to enjoy the rug I had found for the living room. The kids enjoy all the rugs we selected and are very happy to show them off to friends. Now that everyone is happy, we are looking forward to the next addition to our house: the screened in porch!

Bad Drivers

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

In today’s news I saw an article about which state had the worst drivers. It turned out to be the state of New York. They said that last years worst state was New Jersey. I have to take what they say with a grain of salt. I firmly believe that the worst drivers live in Virginia. Having lived here for many years, I have many stories to tell.

The problem with Virginia drivers is that so many people come here from out of state. They come from all states and that makes for a bad time. These people do not seem to understand the basic rules of driving like slow cars and trucks in the right hand lane. Many people know of my disproval of cell phone users, but it’s much more than that.

I hope that everyone will consider their driving habits more carefully. It’s always good to let someone over and to use turn signals and such. I believe that we could take a lot of stress out of life if we all practiced better driving habits!!

The Hot Dog Stand

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

I was out in the drive when one of my neighbors drove by with a hot dog stand behind his truck. I wandered down to be nosy and asked him what was up? He said he had just bought the stand and the rights to place it on the boardwalk down at the beach. He has the second street location and plans to run his cart there. He said he wanted his daughter to have a summer job to earn some money for her college fund.

Over the last many days, he has worked on improving the stand. He added some shelves to it and repainted it to reflect the new logo of Alexi’s ices. I was surprised to learn how many things are involved in the production of hot dogs. Of course he has a roller to cook the dogs, but he has a lot of other equipment as well.

There is a bun warmer and an ice machine. In addition to that there is a freezer and an ice crusher. He also plans to sell sausages and chips. I am glad to see that his daughter Alexis is taking an interest in the cart. She has been helping out doing all the things necessary to put the cart to rights. I hope they do well this summer and earn a lot of dough. I think I’ll stop by the beach one day to see how they are doing!
