Finishing the Fence
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009The outgoing Bush administration ordered that a fence be erected along the U.S. and Mexican borders. This border generally follows the Rio Grande River. Some problems have arisen with the path the fence was to follow. It turns out that much of this land is privately owned and land owners are reluctant to give up their land. One of the major sticking points is that many acres of private land will end up on the wrong side of the fence.
Being as that land owners will be unable to access their land once the fence is built, they feel their land will become worthless. Lawyers are currently hashing out the issue and everyone is standing by for the outcome. The government is under a lot of pressure to finish the fence, but land owners are rightfully concerned. I’ll be waiting to see the outcome of this dilemma and hope the two sides will find a way to compromise.
