Let there be light

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The U.S. military is investing in a new technology. They recently gave a grant to study the feasibility of developing bioluminescence. This is the light that is common in fireflies and other animals. The light does not create heat which is important to the military.

Plans for the new light are being made. It could have a number of uses including lighting landing zones and marking friendly forces. I hope that the military can figure out how to take advantage of Mother Nature and use it for good.

Fishing Trip

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I love to fish and its usually by myself. I usually go every other weekend. I pack my stuff the night before and all I have to do is get dressed and start planning Home Security. It is very relaxing after a week of working. My job is stressful and it feels good to go fishing on the weekends. I started taking my son with me last week. He had never really fished much before. I set his fishing pole up and we were fishing on my boat. It was hard for him to leave the line still, so we started fishing for bass. He reeled the line in several times, and did not even really know what it felt like to have a bite. Once he reeled in the line and the pole started tugging. He did not know what to do. I helped him reel it in and it took some work. He had a very small fishing pole made for kids. The bass he caught was 15 inches long. That was on his first time ever trying to fish. He was so excited to take that fish home to mom. She cooked it up for him, and he was very proud of the fact that he brought home dinner for the family. I can not wait to see what he will catch next time.

A moment of silence

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

The anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center was marked today. The president of the United States spoke about the tragedy and paid homage to the memory of the over 3,000 people who were lost. The rest of America remembered the fallen in their own ways.

I know that I was proud to join millions of other people who held a moment of silence at 8:46 this morning. My thoughts were with the loved ones who lost so much on the terrible day. I hope that our country will continue to struggle against those in the world who want to harm us.

Recovery or Not??

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The administration of President Barack Obama keeps telling us that the economy will soon recover. This is despite recent news that the private sector has been cutting jobs instead of creating them. We learned today that over 10,000 jobs were cut in august by private companies.

This trend is threatening to extend the recovery and possibly throw us back into the mess we were trying so hard to get out of. I hope that these big companies will find a way to hold on to the workers they have and maybe even hire a few more. It sure would be good news.

The Discovery Channel: Experiencing adventures while learning

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Thanks to Erasmo Cortez

If you like to discover new things and if you like to learn then you are probably like me. When I watch my Satellite TV my favorite educational channel is the Discovery Channel. I am always amazed at how many great shows they have. Sometimes I wish I could go on adventures myself, but watching the Discovery Channel is almost just as good. There is this one show, “Man vs. Wild” that is beyond exciting. These crazy guys catch snakes and encounter the wild in ways I’ll never be able to do. I love watching them do these things that are crazy and adventurous. When this show comes on as repeats on Wednesday and Sunday mornings I make sure I’m there to experience adventures with them. I feel like in a way I am sharing in their exciting life and getting to learn at the same time.

The diversity of the Discovery Channel is really what blows my mind. They have all kinds of subjects to choose from. You can watch shows on adventure sports, animals, cars, dinosaurs, history, space, and all sorts of other really cool things. The people they get to do these shows are really cool too. There is this one show with Morgan Freeman, where they discuss the mystery of black holes. I haven’t gotten to watch it yet, but I’m really excited to. Seriously if you like learning then the Discovery Channel is the channel to watch.
