This is the time of year that I love. Today the Super Bowl will be played and I have been looking forward to it for a long time. I am having some friends over to the house for the event and I know that everyone will be as excited as I am. We will have some food so everyone can eat.

This kind of event only happens once a year and so we plan to make the most of it. There will something for everyone I believe. I am fortunate to have a large house and so we will have plenty of room. I am sure it will all go well.

The Christmas tree is finally on the curb. It took us a while to get rid of it but you know how I tend to procrastinate. It took a lot of effort to get the tree into shape, but it has served its purpose and we are done with it for this year.

I feel that it is time to move on to other things. There are birthdays coming up and I have a lot to look forward to. Now that the holiday season is over, it is good to be done with it. For all those who still have their tree up, I say its time to take it down.

But Christmas music, also known as yuletide carols passed down through many generations just add so much to the sprit of Christmas. Mostly if there is music in the air there is music in the heart. So in the spirit of Christmas, keep a song in your heart.

When my sister decided to move, it was a big deal for everyone in the family. We didn’t like the fact that she would be leaving the area, but were glad she was going to start a new life. When we asked her where she wanted to go, she told us that she was looking at Calgary apartments to rent. It was an area that she always wanted to live in as she had spent some time there with her first husband.

The good thing about this area is that there are plenty of choices as to where you want to stay. There are many family communities that I know she would like. We all want her to feel safe when she arrives home. There are many shopping centers in the area as well. All this adds up to a pretty good place to live.

My sister has never been afraid to move and start over. This time is no exception as she will be far away from everyone in the family. We have no relatives in Canada and so she will be completely cut off from us. I know I can always phone her but I will not be the same as seeing her. I guess she can still fly down from time to time as the airport is near her house.

Well, it’s almost time for the kids to get out of school for their summer vacation. They have been looking forward to this for a long time. My son has finished the tenth grade and will be a junior next year. My daughter is especially exited as she will be graduating from high school. We have a big event planned and I am sure she will have a time to remember. It will mark the end of one phase of her life and the beginning of another.

One thing she plans to do this summer is to begin finalizing her plans for college. One college she has been looking at is Walden University. She has some friends who plan to attend that school and she likes the school as she has visited it before. But, before making her final decision, she is making sure she has checked out all the options she has.

One item that is important to us is financial aid. We were lucky to find a site called WaldenU.edu that has a lot of information on the subject. We want her to have a great education but we don’t want to go broke doing it. She has had some good results with applying for scholarships and grants and I am sure that some will come through. I will be pleased when I see her cross the state at her next graduation.

The kids had the best time of all as they got to do many things they have never done before. It was good to see them deal with new things and grow up a little. We also had a cookout and that worked out well too. I always say that family fun is the best kind.

One of my buddies from the warehouse was bragging about how he cooks the best brisket in Virginia. I told him I would take that as a challenge, because EVERYBODY raves about my brisket.

So we are going to have a cook off over Memorial Day weekend. I am taking this challenge seriously and am determined to win the taste test. I have to give some thought to what side dishes I want to prepare. I’m thinking homecut fries and a vinegar based coleslaw, maybe some corn on the cob if I can find some at the grocery store.

Never have been a big fan of mutton or any kind of lamb. I just don’t like the strong taste of that meat. But I guess Easter means lamb for dinner for a lot of folks. I always thought Easter meant ham, but I have had two different people telling me how much they liked their lamb for Easter dinner on Sunday.

One girl bought a rack of lamb ribs, marinated them for a couple of hours and then cooked them on the grill over charcoal.

My buddy in Dallas says he got a whole leg of lamb, cut it in half and grilled half of it for his Easter dinner. The dog got the bone and everyone was happy.

Maybe the problem for me with lamb is that I’ve never had it grilled. I always had it baked like a roast beef and served with mint jelly. I guess I’d be willing to try it again if someone wanted to grill it and let me taste it. I don’t think I want to try it badly enough to do it myself, but I’ll consider any offers from my friends . . .

Thanks to Roman May

As the snowflakes gently glide to earth in a seemingly graceful dance, I feel the spirit of Christmas starting to emerge. I suddenly get the undeniable urge to dig out the Christmas decorations and start the all too familiar holiday tradition of turning our home into a Christmas wonderland.

This is the time of year I love the most, our family seems to grow closer as we share the experience of the meaning of the season. Not only is it in the festivities but the celebration of the birth of Christ that we instill in our children as they grow into adult hood.

As we share in the decorating of our home we listen soothingly to the sounds of the seasons radiating from the radio. As the decorating fills our home with joy and happiness the excitement of the season grows with the twinkling of the multi-colored lights, the whimsical scenes painted on the window accented with the snow edged window panes that gives off a nostalgic picture of Christmas past. I love the older traditional decorations that have been pasted down for generations in our family. It gives us the impression of lost loved ones returning in spirit to celebrate the season with us.

The final touches to our decorating tradition is to sit among the beautiful decorations in the family room and enjoy a big bowl of popcorn as we enjoy a holiday special on our direct tv deals. There is nothing more special that this family time shared with one another.

One thing I really enjoy about Christmas time is the time I am able to spend with my family. Two of my cousins were able to stop by last night and stayed the night with us. They are on their way to Kentucky to visit even more family members. Even so, we had a nice time this morning sitting around the fire and playing a game of cards.

My Mom and I teamed up against them for a game of pinochle. Mom and I lost by one point but it was fun all the same. They will be leaving soon but it was nice to see them and catch up on family matters. Christmas is truly magical for those who are fortunate enough to have family to spend it with.

Written by Sherri Hicks

As far as I’m concerned, one of the best parts of the entire holiday season is the opportunity to watch the best old Christmas specials every year. The animated shows are probably my favorite overall — and though it’s hard to choose a favorite episode of all, if I had to pick my favorite, it would be Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Every year, I love to watch as Rudolph struggles with being different, faces the Abominable Snowman, and ends up finding a way to save Christmas for everyone.

This year, I watched Rudolph on Direct TV with the little girls I babysit for. The younger one had never seen Rudolph, but had heard plenty about him from her older sister. As a seasoned Rudolph fan, the older sister sat next to me and talked about her favorite characters, telling me why she loved Rudolph himself the best. When the show came on, the younger sister was simply in awe. It was amazing to me to see how engrossed in the old style animation she was, especially in comparison to the modern shows the girls usually watch.

However, I suppose that’s what makes Rudolph such a classic and is one of the reasons that it’s my favorite Christmas special. There’s something about it for everyone that transcends current trends and popularity, making it a timeless classic.

Guest post written by my buddy Keith Kramer

Every year Cheryl and I take a full day to go Christmas shopping together. We plan the trip over the phone, about a week before we meet. It’s a standing ritual to make sure that sometime during this phone call we remind each other to set our home security alarms before we leave our houses, always remembering the year I forgot to do that, and had to leave the mall to go back home and adt security home alarm.

We meet at a designated shop at the mall at 9:30 AM, and begin the shopping day separating from each other for about a half hour so we can buy each other something special that we exchange at lunch time at our favorite restaurant. We usually take along a gift bag and tissue paper so we can make the exchange festive without a lot of fuss. We only see each other rarely, and it’s so nice to have the opportunity to see the smiles on each other’s faces at this Christmas shopping luncheon.

Except for that lunch break, we’re serious shoppers until we’re broke or too exhausted to take another step, whichever comes first. It’s an occasion that has become a tradition for the two of us that we look forward to every Christmas season.

I woke up this morning, raised the shade in my bedroom window and was surprised to see that it had snowed overnight. This is the first snow of winter this year. The first snow is always special to me for some reason. I remember as a child that when the first snow came, we would all race home, grab our sleds and head for the nearest hill.

It didn’t matter that there may have been only one inch of snow on the ground when we got there and it wasn’t good for sledding, but, we would wait. Sometimes we waited for hours for the conditions to be just right. Once they were, we would set sail down those hills on our sleds as fast as we could. The races we had were fantastic, the crashes were always fun for some reason and just the general comraderie we felt with our friends was worth all of the cold and runny noses.

Today, I still get that feeling when I see the first snow of winter. I think maybe I should grab my sled and hit the hills. I am sure my back and legs would not appreciate that, so I think I’ll leave that for the kids and just watch. Once we have finished out sledding, we can all go inside and watch a great movie on our satellite tv from www.DirectStarTV.com.

One of the more exciting events that is happening in our family is that my daughter is moving. She was recently married and her husband wants to move to Texas to start his career there. Although the two have been planning the move for some time, there are still a lot of loose ends to wrap up before they leave. I thought I would help them out in any way I could.

I visited the house the planned to move into and I must say that it needed a little work before it would be fit to live in. I spent some time looking for carpet cleaning solutions austin. I knew the rugs were in pretty bad condition. Another thing I looked for was a water damage company austin. There was some damage in the kitchen that needed repair.

One thing that we all liked about the house was the big back yard. It had a big fence for privacy and a nice deck. The problem was that the deck was weathered. That’s why I needed a power washing deck austin. The good part is that once all these problems were taken care of, the house would be a great place for them to start their new lives. I am glad I could help out the young couple and hope they will do well in the future.
