Veils

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Throughout history, religion has been a contentious point. It remains so in today’s world and here is another example of that. The country of Syria has long tried to remain a secular country. The Muslims have tried to influence its politics because of its large population there. The government is determined to keep freedom alive for the populace as a whole and has banned the wearing of veils at universities.

The niqab is a form of dress that only allows the eyes to be seen. This form of dress is representative of conservative Islam. Headscarves will still be allowed under the new rules. Other countries are considering implementing similar rules in order to protect women who feel degraded by the usage of this dressing style. I applaud the move and hope that women around the world will gain the respect they deserve.

Grill on Fire

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

One of my next door neighbors did a really stupid thing last night that was almost tragic. He was trying to start a small black Webber grill on the grass by the pool, and he used a big plastic can of starter fluid to soak the coals.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with that if you do it right. You are supposed to soak the coals before lighting them. But the coals didn’t seem to be burning hot enough to suit him, so he squirted more starter fluid on the coals after they were already lit. I saw this from our balcony and was freaked out. The flames ran up the stream of starter fluid and got into the can he was holding, and it exploded.

Thank God no one was badly hurt. His face and arms are a little burned and it singed his chest hairs. But that’s the worst of it. He got lucky.

Happy April Fools’ Day

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Ever since I was a young boy, I can remember April Fools’ Day. It was always a great holiday and I still enjoy it today. I like the fact that anyone can play a joke on someone else and at any time. You have to stay on your toes and beware of everything. It can be a long day for those who are too trusting. I hope I make it through the day without becoming a fool!

Super Bowl 44

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Great news for the “Who Dat” nation. The New Orleans Saints have won their first Super Bowl victory by defeating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. After getting off to a slow start, the Saints rallied to win the game convincingly. Heroes of the game include their quarterback Drew Brees and their field goal kicker Garrett Hartley who kicked a record setting three 40+ yard field goals.

There is little need to describe the party after the game on Bourbon Street. Folks throughout Louisiana celebrated well into the night. There will be a parade on Tuesday and expect the party to be massive. I say congratulations to the Saints on their victory.
