There are now two breeding centers which hold about 150 of the birds. They are breeding the birds and releasing them into the wild. It has been a long road for recovery, but the birds are doing great.

Thanks for the article from Adrian Waller

In an age where so much of the daily television lineup consists of so-called “reality” TV, it’s refreshing to stumble across the rare educational program that manages to both captivate and educate its’ audience at the same time. For me, Mythbusters is the best show on TV today that teaches its’ viewers about science in a unique and exciting new format. Science isn’t just for geeks anymore; it has finally moved into the mainstream and become cool. With humorous and knowledgeable hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, along with their band of wacky, tech-savy co-hosts Grant Imahara, Kari Byron and Tony Belleci, they work to find answers to the plausibility of viewer-submitted myths. Utilizing theories derived from a variety of scientific disciplines including, physics, biology, and chemistry, this talented group of individuals is able to find real-world answers to some of the most persistent myths around. Covering myths from numerous subject areas such as animals, sports, technology, and food, these experts either prove or disprove many popular ideas. Have you ever wondered: Are elephants really afraid of mice? Can salsa actually eat through the iron bars of a jail cell? Does mixing beer and liquor really make you sick? The Mythbusters are here to answer those questions for you amidst humorous banter that solidifies the overall appeal of the show. Mythbusters airs every Wednesday night on the Discovery Channel on www.tvbydirect.com. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in seeing exactly how much of our daily lives actually revolve around science.

The giant oil company BP has come out with numerous reports saying that the oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico has dissipated. They say that time and microbes have eaten away the oil and that underwater life will return to normal soon. The problem is that some scientists don’t agree with that theory at all.

Samantha Joye is a marine scientist with the University of Georgia. She has studied the gulf in-depth and says the oil has not degraded to the extent that is suitable. Marine life has not recovered in large areas of the gulf and there are signs that the impact of the spill will last for years to come.

They have been working on a program to eliminate their use of fossil fuels and have replaced them with using fuel sources such as manure, potato peels, and cooking oil.

The city has made a serious effort to use the resources they have to generate energy. They burn gas from landfills and use wood waste to generate electricity. I am happy to know that these people are able to use their energy wisely and are helping to protect our earth.

When a meteorite lands on the earth, it becomes the property of whoever’s land it lands on. This has already been established by courts in the U.S. Such was the case of a local landlord where a meteorite fell in Virginia. The landowner has declared his intention to sell the rock to the highest bidder at auction. These rocks can be worth thousands of dollars and are collected avidly by collectors.

Meteorites can also be donated to the National Museum of Natural History that houses the world’s largest collection of space rocks. I think that is the most rightful place that these rocks could end up. Allowing the public to view these relics of the birth of space is only fair.

One thing that we’ve been hearing about is the Chinese who are sending us items that contain a high amount of lead. Since our government has taken control and outlawed the substance being used in the items we buy all the time (Children’s Toys) the Chinese have ceased using the dangerous metal. The problem is that they have switched from lead to Cadmium.

Cadmium is just as deadly as Lead. It is a toxic substance that can slow the development of learning and can shorten a person’s life. Since the ban on lead, experts have noticed an increase in the use of Cadmium in toys manufactured in China. I hope that China will soon realize that America is serious about protecting our children’s health. I call for the end of the use of Cadmium in children’s toys!!

One thing that I consider as being important is preserving the many species of animals that live on the earth. One animal that is in danger of extinction is the Kootenai white sturgeon. Since man has put up a dam called the Libby dam, the water levels have changed and caused the fish to not spawn as nature intended. This has left the fish in danger of extinction.

Experts have revealed that there are fewer than 500 of these fish left. They also say that they have not spawned in over 35 years. While there have been recent attempts to fix the problem, the results have been negative. There will be one last attempt made to help the fish when early next year they will flood the river in a last ditch effort to help them spawn. I hope the attempt is successful.

The bad part is that scientists have forgotten to admit that there some dates in the Mayan calendar that go far beyond this date. One date is equivalent to the year 4772.

That’s why I was glad to see that there are new technologies coming out all the time. One of these is the new Volkswagen L1 Concept car.

Dubbed as the “One-Liter” car, it can get about 240 miles to the gallon. The car is scheduled to be in production as early as 2013. I am glad to see that at least someone is doing some serious research into the problem of gas mileage. I hope to see this car come out as soon as possible.

The state’s legislature has passed an aggressive bill that would require one third of the state’s energy to be from renewable sources such as Wind and solar power. The problem is that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger may not sign the bill.

Under pressure from private interest groups such as the energy producers, he feels great pressure to not sign the bill. I hope he will set an example for the rest of the country and do so anyway. Either way, I am proud of the state’s legislature for sending him a powerful message.

It seems that their populations have been declining over the years due to the release of non-native bugs that are supposed to help control pests. Luckily, help is on the way for these beautiful creatures. There is actually a breeding program for them.

The National Science Foundation is funding a program to bred and release ladybugs. They are looking for the two spotted, nine spotted, and transverse ladybugs that have all but disappeared. The program is going well and we all hope that the reappearance of these bugs will begin soon.

As I like to keep track of new technologies, I ran across a really good one the other day. It involves using recycled plastics to make railroad ties. I think it’s a pretty good idea. Everyone knows we have plenty of plastic to be recycled and there is always a need for new railroad ties. The two seem to fit together. There were some interesting facts that I’d like to share.

One thing is that these ties meet all the standards set by the government. There has been a lot of testing before the idea was seriously considered. The second thing is that by using composite railroad ties, we can help the environment. Another good aspect is that many of the chemicals used to create wood railroad ties are not needed. I’ll be glad if this idea works out and the government takes advantage of it!
